Renewable Power Group

Renewable electricity generation for delivery to the grid

Along with the Generator Group, the Renewable Power Markets Group (RPMG) does not serve a particular technology or renewable resource, but is a group which cuts across all technologies.

Main policy areas:

Participation and personnel

Subject to the bye-laws, any REA member is able to participate in any sector group.

This group mainly comprises companies with an interest in the traded market for ROCs (Renewable Obligation Certificates), or other market based mechanisms used to promote renewables, such as the Energy Efficiency Commitment, which is becoming increasingly relevant to domestic-scale renewables.

Activities

The group is focused on issues which might affect the Renewable Power Markets – particularly those which might damage investor confidence.  It considers and lobbies for changes which might improve the operation of the market and also looks very carefully at proposed amendments to the legislation, such as those made in the Amendment orders or in the various Reviews that have already taken place. This group formed following the problems resulting from TXU going into administration leaving a shortfall in the buy-out fund. It was influential in the development of the resulting Amendment Order 2005 and has led to the development of a number of other interventions to improve the efficiency and confidence in the ROC market.

Projects and ongoing work:

Meetings and events

As a market-based group, there is inevitably linkage with a number of the REA’s technology-focussed sector groups.  There is no dedicated policy manager or annual event dedicated to this group, as the REA executive and the main Annual Conference fulfil these roles.
