FAQS about renewables for homes and gardens

This section deals with domestic and community scale renewables. For larger scale projects look at Renewable Electricity and Renewable Heat and CHP.

Many of the questions you may have about onsite renewables will be answered in the Onsite Renewables section of this website.

What renewables can I use in my house?

There are many different types of renewable heat and electricity generation you could consider, depending on your circumstances. These are described in the Onsite Renewables section of this website.

Unless you know what you want, it would be best to get a specialist to advise you.

Who can give me some advice on micro-renewables?

We suggest you start with the following organisations:

Energy Saving Trust (which has a massive FAQ section on renewables)

The National Energy Foundation, 01908 665555

Or for small businesses: The Carbon Trust - Helpline 0800 085 2005

Good suppliers of onsite renewables systems should also be able to help.

How do I find a micro-renewables supplier in my area

Visit www.realassurance.org.uk where you can find an accredited, professional installer local to you.

Who do I talk to about connecting renewables to my heating system?

You don’t need to obtain permission to do this, but modifications to your heating system may need to be done by a qualified installer. Talk to your micro-renewables supplier.

Who do I talk to about connecting renewables to my electricity supply?

Your onsite renewables supplier should help you with this, as should your own electricity supplier.

The Energy Networks Association maintains a list of the network operators in each region: DNO Contact List

Alternatively, this is a list of DNO contacts  for connecting small scale generation to the electricity transmission network, compiled by the REA.

How can I sell the electricity from my solar PV/ mini wind system?

You should contact your electricity supplier for more information. Almost all of them have tariffs for micro-generators.

There are also a few specialist renewable electricity suppliers such as Good Energy and Ecotricity.
