The UK Government tries to water down the new draft of the Renewable Energy Directive

UK Government attempt to weaken EU Renewable Energy legislation

2008/07/24 09:00:00 GMT+1

The UK wants to weaken proposed European legislation to give renewable projects priority access to national power grids.

The draft EU Renewable Energy Directive is intended to support the EU target to generate 20% of energy from renewable sources by 2020.

On access to the electricity grid, the draft directive said: "Member states shall also provide for priority access to the grid system of electricity produced from renewable energy sources".

However the UK wants to change "shall" to "may” making priority access for renewables an option rather than a requirement
