Feed-in Tariffs

Renewable Electricity Tariffs

Tariffs payable to energy users generating their own renewable electricity

Renewable Electricity Tariffs called 'Feed-in tariffs for small scale low carbon generation' are to be introduced in the UK following the inclusion of enabling powers in the Energy Act 2008. Renewable heat tariffs are also scheduled to be introduced and the common aspects between these two measures are described here and FAQs about the tariffs are listed here..

These tariffs are still being designed, and government intends that they will be in April 2010 as detailed in the timetable.

Eligibility

The tariffs will not apply to systems above 5MW, as it is anticipated that larger projects would continue to be supported by the Renewables Obligation (RO). It is expected that electricity generating projects can be supported by the tariffs or the RO, but not both.

Some existing RO-accredited projects may be allowed (and projects below 50kW perhaps even required) to transfer to the tariffs. New projects of a certain size (perhaps 50kW to 5MW) may get a one-off option to choose which nechanism to join.

All common forms of renewable energy generation have been included.

Tariff levels

Tariffs will be set for each eligible technology.
