The REA has identified several errors in a BBC News article (‘Biofuels: MPs to consider subsidies for power stations’ – 6th March 2013) on the use of biomass and bioliquids to generate renewable power in the UK. The issue was also discussed, with a disappointing lack of balance, on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme of the same day.

The REA held a lunchtime meeting with members and MEPs in the European Parliament in Brussels on Tuesday 26th February. This meeting was part of the European 'Keep on track!' project, which aims to check how EU member states are measuring up to their Renewable Energy Directive (RED) targets. 10 MEPs were represented, either in person or by their assistants. Gaynor Hartnell and Clare Wenner made presentations respectively on how the UK is doing under the RED and Indirect Land Use Change (ILUC).
There were a number of questions on the rewards to different technologies under Electricity Market Reform (EMR) and a fuller debate on the implications of the ILUC proposals and how these could be amended to enable the UK biofuels industry to preserve and promote investment, jobs and growth.
Download Gaynor and Clare's presentations via the links below.

The REA is backing the proposal to introduce a Green Power Auction Market (GPAM) as a mechanism to ensure route-to-market for independent renewable generators within the Electricity Market Reform (EMR) package.
These documents, prepared by the Independent Renewable Energy Generators group, answer some frequently asked questions about GPAM and route-to-market.

Under the Energy Bill, Contracts for Difference (CfDs) will replace the Renewables Obligation as the means of increasing the deployment of larger scale renewble electricity generation. There is a concern that generators with a CfD will have difficulty in gaining the market price for their power sales.
A number of independent generators have proposed a means of auctioning the power from CfDs: Green Power Auction Markets (GPAM). A three minute overview presentation can be viewed here.
A more detailed explanation by David Handley of RES can be downloaded here and viewed with audio narration, if watched as a slideshow.
An amendment to introduce the GPAM is being tabled to the Energy Bill. It is important that companies register their support for the proposal. You can do that by following this link.

Keep-on-Track! is a three year European project, running from 2012 to 2015, whose aim is to ensure that timely progress is made towards meeting national renewable energy targets and action plans. It is supported under the EU’s Intelligent Energy Europe programme, co-ordinated by the European Renewable Energy Council (EREC) and it involves industry associations from 11 EU countries. The Renewable Energy Association is providing the input for the UK.

This video explains in 3 minutes the basic principles of a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP), and how it is able to extract usable heat even when the weather is cold.
It highlights the year-round stability of ground temperature, and shows a closed-loop system with horizontal and vertical ground loop configurations.
A simple comparison of GSHPs with electric and gas heating systems is included, based on an anticipated COP of 3.

In the interest of keeping members updated with developments in the planning area that impact on renewables, the REA has drafted an REA ‘planning update’. Wherever possible, links to source information are included for those who want indepth details. Also attached are two useful documents from EnergyUK, drafted by Jane Smith who manages their Industry Planning Group (in which the REA participates).
The update covers the following:

‘Renewable Energy: Made in Britain,’ a ground-breaking new report from the REA and Innovas.
This report marks the first time that the turnover and employment figures of the entire UK renewables sector have been quantified and brought together in one place. The report finds that in 2010/11, the UK renewables industry was worth £12.5 billion and supported 110,000 jobs, with 400,000 in total required to meet the 2020 renewables targets. The report also reveals:
• the overall increase in market value from 2009/10 to 2010/11 was 11% - outstripping economic growth over the same period (1.4%) by a factor of eight;
• meeting our renewable energy targets would displace fossil fuels with a cumulative value of £60 billion to 2020, giving a significant boost to the UK’s balance of trade.
The report costs £25.00 per copy and we are only able to accept payment by credit card.
When you click the checkout button, if you’re an REA member then log in, and if you’re not a member, click the register button and simply enter an email address and password.
As soon as payment is received a copy will be posted to you.

It is possible for electricity generated from mixed wastes and from biomass to qualify for support under
the Renewables Obligation. In order to obtain this support, the operator of the energy-from-waste plant
is required to determine the fraction of the energy content of the fuel which is derived from biomass
(i.e. non-fossil fuels).

This document has been prepared by the Renewable Energy Association, with advice from Steering Group1, and in consultation with industry through a stakeholder workshop and an industry-wide survey. It is not the UK's official National Action Plan but the Department of Energy and Climate Change has been consulted during the production of this document, and is encouraged to implement the suggestions it makes.
