Help SEPA shape technical requirements for larger non-waste anaerobic digestion plants

Registration-level standard conditions for anaerobic digestion plants using non-waste feedstocks and processing under 100 tonnes/day were published on 5th August 2025 after the introduction of regulation for these plants by the Environmental Authorisation (Scotland) Amendment Regulations 2025.

The next stage of consultation and engagement has begun with the launch on 6 October 2025 of the Call for Evidence (Call for Evidence : Non Waste Anaerobic Digestion over 100 tonnes per day: Permit technical requirements – Scottish Environment Protection Agency – Citizen Space). As an evidence-led organisation SEPA is keen to ensure that operators have the opportunity to provide detailed information via this call for evidence that it can draw on to develop its consultation (in early 2026) on proposed permit conditions for non waste anaerobic digestion (AD) sites handling more than 100 tonnes per day. These technical requirements will inform the permit conditions for anyone carrying out this activity after 1 April 2028.

SEPA will engage with relevant operators during the Call for Evidence. To register your interest in further engagement during the call for evidence please email [email protected]

The Call for Evidence, closes on the 9 January 2026
