Circular, Sustainable Cities and Towns: Enabling transformation in urban food systems

This London Climate Action Week, join us for an expert-led discussion on how local councils can embed greater circularity and sustainability into food systems in UK cities and towns.

Globally, agrifood systems contribute approximately one third of total GHG emissions. With roughly 30% of all food supplies wasted globally each year, the emissions from food waste alone make up 8-10% of total planetary emissions. In the UK, WRAP data shows that roughly 25% of all food is wasted, with nearly three quarters comprised of edible food. Yet research shows as much as 25% of the population of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland experience food insecurity, with those in urban areas disproportionately impacted.

A circular, sustainable urban food system could simultaneously unlock reductions in food-waste emissions, support greater access to healthy, nutritious food for vulnerable people, and enable more sustainable agricultural practices throughout the UK’s farming communities. But how can leaders in UK cities and towns put this vision into action?

As local governments face some of the largest reforms in a generation, this moment provides a strategic opportunity to assess how local councils can incorporate greater circularity and sustainability into UK cities and towns.  We are delighted to be joined by Estelle Herzenhorn (Director of Food System Transformation, WRAP) who will chair this timely conversation with a panel of experts working to embed circular and sustainable principles in UK urban hubs.
