Green Gas Day 2025: Refreshing, Insightful & Motivational

This year’s UK Green Gas Day hosted by us and CNG Services was a resounding success – illustrated by packed rooms, powerful speakers, and conversation driven by a shared sense of purpose. Since its launch in 2012, it’s evolved far beyond a conference. The event once again brought together 300+ attendees with key representatives from DESNZ, NESO and the gas networks, reflecting the importance of the event in driving innovation in the sector, shaping the future of green gas.

Biomethane: Building on Momentum

We noticed a renewed energy across the sector. Recent government recalculations on the role of biomethane in meeting the UK’s net zero targets have reinforced what we in the industry have long understood – green gas is a long-term pillar of a secure and decarbonised energy system. This momentum was clearly on display at this year’s Green Gas Day.

Rich Discussions Across Policy, Business & Innovation

Policy Landscape:

Experts explored the evolving frameworks for biomethane, AD, and hydrogen, outlining opportunities within the Green Gas Support Scheme (GGSS) and potential intersections with the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). Discussions highlighted how smart policy alignment can unlock investment and innovation.

Business Models & Markets:

Speakers examined the commercial mechanics underpinning the next phase of growth. From long-term revenue models and CO₂ utilisation opportunities to the emerging role of carbon markets.

Green Gas Task Force Insights:

The Green Gas Taskforce launched its “Economics of Biomethane” report during the event – an analysis that makes a powerful case for scaling up biomethane production. The findings of the report, commissioned by Cadent and delivered by Baringa, included that Green Gas could cut the cost of achieving Net Zero – saving an average of £174 billion by 2050 and that greater use can reduce system costs and that the negative emissions from CCS could reduce costs in the sectors that are most expensive to decarbonise.

Additionally a report on the use of biomethane to decarbonise HGV was also launched on the day. The findings from this report included that biomethane in HGV can deliver GHG savings today in replacing diesel but also in tandem with the development of BEV in other transport modes.

These two reports follow on from the recent publication of the report into the potential feedstock availability which is almost triple the previous estimations.

A Sector United:

Together, we’ve built a community committed to delivering a future of sustainable gas production. We look forward to continuing this collaboration throughout the year and to welcoming everyone back next year for Green Gas Day 2026, where we’ll no doubt be celebrating even greater progress.
