DESNZ has published a study investigating methane emissions from AD plants in the UK. Recognising the vital importance of biomethane in achieving a robust renewable energy system in the UK, the report highlights the need to understand and mitigate methane emissions to ensure that the benefits of using renewable biomethane over natural gas are not undermined by preventable methane slippage on AD plants.
The research, undertaken by the National Physical Laboratory, involved a survey of 7 AD sites to investigate the potential sources of methane emissions and to assess the magnitude of these emissions, using both short-term and long-term monitoring techniques. The project culminated in a report covering the results of research, including how the study was conducted, the key findings of the research, and several targeted strategies identified to reduce methane emissions from the AD industry.
