REA response to Scottish Bioenergy Consultation

Join our online member meeting to discuss and inform the REA’s response to the Scottish Draft Bioenergy Policy Statement Consultation which closes on 12th June 2024.

After a short introduction, we will work through the consultation questions, sharing the REA’s position and asking for member feedback to incorporate into our response. We are keen to ensure our response incorporates all bioenergy technologies represented by the REA and are especially keen to hear from members operating in Scotland.

The Scottish Bioenergy Policy Statement, published on 20th March follows REA engagement with the Scottish Government, including a roundtable with Gillian Martin MSP, Minister for Energy, Just Transition and Fair Work, last year.

The Statement is very similar to the UK Government’s Biomass Strategy, published in August 2023, although with a slightly heavier focus on areas outside of power production, including heat and transport, and the development of domestic feedstocks.

There are two chapters in the Statement. The first focuses on a priority use framework for bioenergy, types of bioenergy technologies, and the challenges and opportunities for Scotland using BECCS. Chapter two focuses on biomass sustainability, competition for supply, and the role and potential of using perennial energy crops.
