• ‘Last Resort Disconnection of Embedded Generation’ consultation to produce modification for emergency instructions to disconnect embedded generators
  • REA say that compensation should be provided to embedded generators if they are disconnected through no fault of their own
  • Fossil fuel generation should be switched off before renewables

The REA have responded to the publication of the ‘Last Resort Disconnection of Embedded Generation’ consultation.

The proposed changes would produce the guidelines for the emergency instructions that National Grid ESO can issue to Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) to disconnect embedded generators. This would only be done as a last resort, after the exhaustion of all other commercially available options.

However, while the proposed arrangements would only be used as a last resort, the REA say that compensation should be provided to embedded generators if they are disconnected through no fault of their own. Fossil fuel generation should also be switched off before renewables.

A high proportion of embedded generators are renewable.

Frank Gordon, Head of Policy at the Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA), said:

“Though we appreciate that the arrangements being brought in under this modification are proposed to be last resort only, we believe that some form of compensation should be provided to embedded generators in the event that they are disconnected through no fault of their own. We have campaigned for this clarification and compensation since the proposals were first raised in May last year.

“Given our Net Zero commitments, instructions should also be issued to the effect that fossil fuel generation should be switched off before renewables are and particular care must be taken for types of generation with possible safety implications from being switched off, such as landfill gas sites.”
