• The REA welcomes today’s Hydrogen Champion Report;
  • The report includes recommendations intended to address policy and regulatory concerns, highlight project challenges and identify opportunities for industry to contribute more to solutions;
  • REA supports recommendations for industry to contribute, but stress that government needs to take the lead to assure the market.

The REA (Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology) welcomes today’s Hydrogen Champion Report which includes recommendations to government and industry to accelerate the development and growth of the UK hydrogen economy.

Jane Toogood, the Hydrogen Champion was tasked with examining whether the UK is doing everything it can to maintain momentum and realise hydrogen opportunities. The independent report highlights the need for greater clarity on upcoming policy decisions for hydrogen users, further available funding, and urgent overall delivery of the hydrogen roadmap to 2030 and beyond. The REA echoes these calls, saying they are actions that the industry urgently requires.

The REA also welcomes several more of the report’s recommendations, such as:

  • Kickstarting investment by overcoming barriers to deliver the first CCUS-enabled and electrolytic hydrogen production projects at scale;
  • Providing a clear vision for investors on how and when hydrogen will scale-up beyond the first round of projects;
  • Driving rapid development of the hydrogen economy by stimulating demand in blending, heating and transport.

Furthermore, the REA supports the recommendations for industry to further contribute to delivery and says that industry stands ready to deliver the UK’s ambitions and urges government to now take the lead to assure the market.

Frank Gordon, Director of Policy at the REA (Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology), said:

“The Hydrogen Champion Report highlights the need for greater clarity on upcoming policy decisions for hydrogen users, funding available, and overall delivery of the hydrogen roadmap to 2030 and beyond. This is something that the REA has been calling for, and industry urgently needs.

“The REA welcomes the report’s recommendations, particularly in kickstarting investment by overcoming barriers to deliver the first CCUS-enabled and electrolytic hydrogen production projects at scale, providing a clear vision for investors on how and when hydrogen will scale-up beyond the first round of projects, and driving rapid development of the hydrogen economy by stimulating demand in blending, heating, and transport.

“Although government must now take the lead to assure the market, industry stands ready to deliver the UK’s hydrogen ambitions.”
