The REA has joined with five other energy trade associations to call on the government to urgently address electricity network constraints, which remain one of the largest barriers to the deployment of new renewable generation.

Within the letter, the industry highlight that some energy projects are facing delays of up to fifteen years due to capacity constraints and that billions of pounds of private investment are currently being delayed. The letter calls on Grant Shapps MP, the BEIS Secretary of State, to have Ofgem accelerate investment in the transmission and distribution networks. It goes on to call for a  CEO-led plan from the system operator, transmission and distribution networks for immediate measures to address constraints. These should include joined-up and effective ‘queue’ management and a smarter, more flexible approach to unlock capacity.

The other signatories along with the REA are:

REGEN

Electricity Storage Network

Solar Energy UK

Scottish Renewables

Renewable UK
