The Scottish Science Advisory Council (SSAC) have published a report entitled “Towards  a Circular Economy: Scotland’s Bioresource Flows”. The report is an independent assessment of existing evidence and the quality of the evidence on “bioarisings”. The report finds that there is poor quality evidence, and generally a lack of primary data.

Recommendations for improving the collection and dispersion of data include:

  • Mandatory digital waste tracking;
  • Set SMART targets aligned with data collection;
  • Facilitate the sharing of bioarisings data, especially on temporospatial variation;
  • Promote sub-national independent connectivity.

The SSAC report also recommends moving away from language that refers to bioarisings as “waste”.
